Lou Diamond Phillips was born in 1962 to Lucita Umayam Areas and Gerald Amon Upchurch, both of whom worked as crew chiefs on C-130s in the United States Marine Corps. Subic Bay Naval Station in the Philippines was his birthplace.

He was named after the Marine legend Leland “Lou” Diamond. Following his father’s death, he adopted his stepfather’s surname, i.e., “Phillips,” as his own.

His upbringing was carried out in Texas, where he attended Flour Bluff High School in Corpus Christi and graduated in 1980. Furthermore, he earned a Drama B from the University of Texas at Arlington.
