Barra was born in the Michigan town of Royal Oak. Her father’s name was Reino, and her mother’s name was Eva Pyykkonen. She grew up in Mountain Iron, Minnesota, a small mining town. Her parents are of Finish origin, as a result of her grandfather, Victor Makela, marrying a Finnish immigrant from Teuva, Maria Luoma. Her father spent 39 years working in a Pontiac automobile factory in Detroit.

She began her education at Waterford schools in Michigan and went on to graduate from Waterford Mott High School. She enrolled in Kettering University, formerly known as General Motors Institute, and earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. She later received a Gm. She began working for General Motors as a co-op student at the age of 18, where her duties included checking fender panels and inspecting hoods and using her money to finance her own tuition. She also held engineering and managerial jobs, including supervising the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly facility.

Barra was appointed vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering in 2008, and after a year, she was promoted to vice president of Global Human Resources, a post she held for two years. In 2011, she was appointed executive vice president of Global Product Development, where she was in charge of design: in order to reduce the number of automobile platforms in GM and achieve great success, her vice president’s responsibilities were expanded to include Global purchasing and Supply Chain.

She became the first female CEO of a car company when she became CEO of General Motors in 2014. During her first year as CEO, they were able to issue 84 safety recalls in more than 30 million cars, and the Senate called her to testify about the faulty ignition switch that had caused recalls and deaths and became the number one suspect claimed to have paid for awards to burnish the CEO and corporation image at the time.

In an effort to modify workplace culture, policies were developed to reduce recalls and encourage personnel to report any problems they encountered. She has managed to focus as the CEO of General Motors by the corporation migrating into the digital industry by pressing through with key acquisitions in the automated driverless car space. They have also created the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which has been rejected by Tesla in the development of the first electric vehicle.

She was voted to Disney’s board of directors in 2017, becoming the company’s 12th member and fourth woman. She has managed to be a member of various councils and boards, including a member of the General Dynamics board of directors, a member of the Detroit Economic Club and Detroit Country Day School’s board of directors, and a member of The Business Council. She also serves on the boards of trustees of Stanford University and the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
