Mary Hart began her television hosting career in 1975 at WMT-TV, which was eventually renamed KGAN. She ultimately joined KMTV before moving to KTVY in 1976; it changed its name to KFOR-TV, where she co-hosted a show called Dannysday with Danny Williams. She intended to leave journalism and traveled to Los Angeles in 1979 to work as a sales representative for the Yearbook Company.
She became destitute after leaving her job and decided to audition for a small role on the serial series Days of Our Lives.
