Michael finished second in the SCCA National Championship Run-Offs at Road Atlanta in 1985, his first season of SCCA Formula Atlantic racing. He won four races in the ECAR Formula Atlantic Championship during 1986 and 1987, and was third in points in 1987. In 1988, he competed in six Indy Lights races for Chip Ganassi Racing, winning one of them at Pocono. He tried to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 in 1989 with Bettenhausen Racing’s 1987 Lolachassis but failed, as did colleague Tony Bettenhausen.

Michael wrecked hard in practice in the Pocono Raceway race the following year, failing to qualify. In 1990, he finished first in the Camel Lights classification at the 24 Hours of Daytona alongside his father Peter. He also returned to the CARTseries in 1987, driving a 1987 Lola chassis in seven races, with a career-best result of 12th in the Meadowlands event. In 1991, he participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona with Dale Coyne Racing, then returned in 1994 and 1995 to try to qualify for the Indy 500 with a 1993 Lola powered by a pushrod V8 engine conceived and manufactured by his father Peter.

Michael was unable to finish rookie orientation in 1994, and the team was forced to recruit Johnny Parsons to drive the vehicle. The vehicle never got up to speed, and the team did not try to qualify. Michael took up driving responsibilities in 1995, although he failed to qualify once again. Due to a significant drop in turbo boost for the pushrod V-8s, they were unable to get up to speed. He left the company in 1995.
