Before making his debut for New South Wales in 1991, Michael Slater was a member of the Australian Cricket Academy. He was a part of the Australian Cricket Academy before making his debut for New South Wales in 1991. Slater made his international test debut against England on June 3, 1993, at the age of 23, during England’s Ashes tour.

In his debut encounter, he scored a half-century, followed by a century at Lord’s. His outstanding play carried over into consecutive bouts. On December 9, 1993, he made his One-Day International debut against South Africa, but did not perform well in the series.

Slater was the series’ leading run-scorer in the 1994-1995 Ashes series, with 623 runs. He also struck his first double-century against Sri Lanka at the WACA in Perth the following season. In the 1998-1999 Ashes series, he scored the game-winning 123 runs against England, accounting for 66.84 percent of his team’s total.

He was noted throughout his career for his predilection for the “nervous nineties”: he was fired nine times out of 23. During the 2001 Ashes tour, he was dropped from the team following the Oval Test.
