She began competing against females much older than herself when she was twelve. She competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, when she was 13.

She did not, however, compete in any of the swimming events at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The swimmer’s best performance was 37th place in the 100-meter freestyle.

She competed in six events at the 2010 National Championships and finished second in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke at the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.

By the end of 2011, at the FINA Swimming World Cup 2011, she had established the first world record of her career in the 200-meter backstroke, breaking Shiho Sakai’s record of 2:00.13 with a time of 2:00.03.
