Tyrone Curtis Muggsy Bogues was born on January 9, 1965, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. He is currently 57 years old. His father, Richard Bogues, and his mother, Elaine Bogues, gave birth to him. He also has brothers and sisters named Sherron, Anthony, and Chuckie. Their mother reared them while his father was in prison. Later, in August 1993, his father died of pneumonia. His brother Chuckie also struggled with drugs. He also attended Dunbar High School. He was trained by Bob Wade in high school. He afterwards went to Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

In his junior year of college, he averaged 11.3 points, 8.4 assists, and 3.1 steals per game. Later in his career, he became the ACC career leader in steals and assists. He played for the United States national team in the 1986 FIBA World Championship. His team eventually won the tournament’s gold medal. He was a member of the Rhode Island Gulls of the United States Basketball League for a time (USBL).
