Israeli Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev is a 68-year-old man. He was born in Haifa, Israel, on October 2, 1953. He was born into a Jewish family of Ashkenazi descent. His father is Haim Bar-Lev, a former Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces and cabinet minister. He joined the Israeli army in 1971 and rose through the ranks to head Sayeret Matkal, Israel’s most elite special forces unit, and then the Jordan Valley Brigade.

While serving in Sayeret Matkal, Bar-Lev was involved in significant undertakings such as the Savoy Hotel and Entebbe. Bar-Lev participated in the IDF’s early 1990s negotiations with Palestinians, which resulted in the Gaza–Jericho Agreement, and later in the negotiations that resulted in the Israel–Jordan peace treaty.
