As the lead singer of his band, Ralph excelled at showcasing his abilities. He formed a group with Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronald DeVoe at a young age. Their plan was to form a group similar to a “new edition” of the Jackson 5. “Candy Girl” was the group’s first hit. They were signed to StreetWise Records at the time.

After that, they had a string of hits, including “Lost in Love,” “Is This the End,” “Earth Angel” from Karate Kid 2, “Count Me Out,” “Tears on My Pillow” with Little Anthony, “Once in a Lifetime Groove” from the Gregory Hines/Billy Crystel film Running scared, “crucial,” “If it isn’t loved,” and “You’re Not My Kind of Girl.”

Tresvant then embarked on his solo career. He attempted to replicate his accomplishments while in the organization. As a solo performer, he signed with MCA Records. Tresvant’s confidence was shared by producer Jimmy Jam and composer Terry Lewis. They collaborated to create the smash hit album “Heartbreak.”
