The band released 21 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums, 42 chart-topping singles, and sold over 75 million records in all. They have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and were honored Artist of the Decade by the Academy of Country Music in 1989 and Country Group of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1999.

In May 2002, the band announced their retirement during the Academy of Country Music Awards telecast. They continued their American Farewell Tour around the country for the rest of 2002 and 2003. The band was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
