Raw Ewry was born in Lafayette, Indiana, United States of America on October 14, 1873. Raymond “Ray” Clarence Ewry is his true name. There is no information about his parents and siblings’ names or occupations. He is a citizen of the United States. Similarly, he was of Caucasian ethnicity. He was born under the sign of Libra and practiced Christianity.

In terms of education, he completed his education at a local school in his hometown. He did, however, attend Purdue University. Purdue University awarded him undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil and mechanical engineering. In the late 1890s, he had even taught engineering.

Ewry chose to be an athlete throughout his life. But things were not so simple. He had Polio when he was 7 years old, which forced him to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. But, because to his perseverance and willpower, he decided to train his legs, and he progressively gained strength in them. In a few years, he began playing football and captained his university’s track team.

This accomplished athlete later focused mostly on jumping, either standing long jump or standing triple jump. He also set new world marks in the standing high jump, standing long jump, and standing triple jump. He has represented his country multiple times, most notably at the Olympics. In 1900, he made his Olympic debut in Paris. Later, he went on to perform brilliantly in the Olympics of 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri, 1906, and 1908 in London. From 1898 to 1910, he was a 15-time national champion in standing competitions.

He competed with the New York Athletic Club at the club level, where he helped the club win 15 US amateur track championships. Unfortunately, the standing long jump was eliminated internationally by the Olympic Committee in the 1930s. As an engineer, he went on to construct boilers for US military vessels during World War I. He was a lead engineer on the construction of an aqueduct that still transports water from the Catskill Mountains to New York City.

As a result, he went on to become a Hydraulic engineer. Without a question, most sportswriters regard him as the best jumper in Olympic history. The more essential fact is that he accomplished all of this by fighting biological obstacles, as he was previously thought to be confined to a wheelchair.

Throughout his career, this great athlete has received numerous trophies and medals. He has established a legacy by winning a record-breaking ten gold medals in four Olympics while also not losing any of the competitions in which he competed. However, Michael Phelps now holds the record for most medals. People dubbed him “The Human Frog” because of his exceptional ability to jump higher.

In 1983, the Olympic Committee inducted him into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame for his tremendous career. The Greater Lafayette community even erected a monument to him at Lafayette Jefferson High School in honor of their hometown hero. In 2014, a portion of the road in Indiana was named Raymond Clarence Ewry Memorial Parkway in his honor.
