Ray Evernham’s Profession & Career
Before being the crew chief he is today, Evernham was a modified driver, a separate division called the Modified Division which is still owned and operated by NASCAR. At the age of 26, he was hired by the International Race of Champions (IROC) as a chassis specialist. He was very good at it because he could translate the issues that drivers faced concerning the car’s handling.
In the middle of the 1991 season, Evernham crashed at the Flemington Speedway. The impact he suffered in the accident was quite heavy. It damaged his brain stem which left him with a depth perception impairment.
Later in an interview, he admitted that he was frustrated with his performance as a driver and found himself pushing himself too much. His accident prompted officials to put foam blocks in the corners of the track to reduce the impact.
At the end of 1991, Evernham started working for Alan Kulwicki, a NASCAR driver, but things weren’t going so well for them because they kept clashing with each other. As he was leaving the garage area, he was stopped by Ford engineers, Lee Morse and Preston Miller, who had an opportunity for him.
In the Ford team, he was re-united with Jeff Gordon with whom they worked with in 1990. This was when Evernham did some chassis work for Gordon’s Pontiac team.
He remained as the crew chief for Gordon after he moved up into the Winston Cup Series for Hendrick Motorsports from 1992 to 1999. Together with Gordon, Evernham won 47 Cup races, and 3 Cup championships and was the dominant NASCAR team at the time. In 2018, he was voted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame for his work as a crew chief.
Ray Evernham was the crew chief for the ‘Rainbow Warriors’ pit crew which was named for its colourful DuPont Automotive Finishes. Evernham is considered as one of the innovators for improving the duration and efficiency of a pit stop. Instead of using a team of mechanics, Evernham was famed for using a group of specialists who were trained to perfect their individual task.
Ray Evernham has also appeared on TV a number of times mainly as an analyst. He has worked in three separate stints for ESPN and ABC; one in 2000, the other from 2008 to 2010, and the third one from 2012 to 2013. He has also been the host of AmeriCARnaon Velocity since 2013.
