Ray Illingworth’s Profession & Career

Unfortunately, Ray Illingworth’s three-year term as chairman of selectors, which happened at a time when he stood to lose public support, harmed his once-glamourous reputation as a cricket tactician.

However, his seeming mental toughness was proved to be pigheadedness when, as chairman, he refused his captains the same right. In the 1996 World Cup, he refused to let Mike Atherton use Alec Stewart as the wicket-keeper.

Furthermore, Illingworth’s best skill as a captain was making it appear as though he had 14 or 15 players on the field. When the opposition was in trouble, he was so excellent at preventing a batsman’s favorable scoring strokes that it usually appeared like there were no runs available anywhere.

Illingworth’s off-spin, which averaged 1.91 runs per over in 61 Tests, was particularly efficient in this area. He stood just under six feet tall and had a strong frame.

His batting, which he usually did at No. 6 or 7, was based on orthodox technique and a tenacious determination not to lose his wicket, as indicated by the fact that one-fifth of his innings finished with no runs scored, sometimes to the prejudice of his teammates. Despite this, he was one of the most popular players of his period due to his amusing sense of humor and a plethora of recollections.

Personal Death and Life

Ray was a heterosexual man. In terms of marital status, he was married. He married Shirley Milnes in 1958. They were married till her death in March 2021. They had two lovely children, Diane and Vicky.

Following a devastating oesophageal cancer diagnosis, he advocated for assisted suicide in November 2021. He also backed the Assisted Dying Bill, which would have legalized the practice in the UK. The measure was given a second reading in the House of Lords in October 2021.

He insisted on his support for assisted suicide and declared that he would rather “leave the world peacefully” than “live the way his wife had suffered” in the previous 12 months before her death. On December 25, 2021, he died at the age of 89. His daughters lived on after him.
