Richard Karn Wilson was born to Lousie and Gene Wilson on February 17, 1956, in Seattle, Washington. His father served in World War II as a Seabee (Construction Battalion member) (Construction Battalion member). He also has a sibling sister named Sue. Richard went on to attend Roosevelt High School as a teen, and after graduating, he enrolled at the University of Washington.

He joined the world-famous fraternity ‘Beta Theta Pi while at university. Along with that, he gained more drama and theatre experience at the Edinburgh Festival. After majoring in Drama in 1979, he relocated to New York City. He was given the opportunity to appear in a Michelob Beer commercial.
