Ownership of the Dallas Mavericks

Perot purchased the Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball franchise from founding owner Don Carter in March 1996. During his four-year tenure, the Mavericks made little more progress on the court than they had in Carter’s last seasons, and nowhere near what they would do under his replacement, Mark Cuban.

It was reported that he was a rookie or uninterested in basketball and that he was using his position as a team owner to further his projects, most notably Victory Park, which was highlighted by the American Airlines Center, which opened in 2001.

In January 2000, he sold the franchise to Cuban, and the team has not had a losing season in the fifteen years since, winning two Western Conference championships and the NBA championship in 2011.

Perot, who kept a 5% stake, sued Cuban, claiming the franchise was insolvent or on the verge of insolvency. In a June 2010 court filing, Cuban claimed that Perot was wrong to demand money to compensate for losses on the Victory Park real estate project.

The lawsuit was withdrawn in 2011, in part because Cuban claimed good team management following the team’s recent victory in the 2011 NBA Finals. In 2014, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the verdict on appeal.

After his initial defeat, Perot attempted to bar Mavericks fans from using the parking lots he controlled near the American Airlines Center. Perot and his predecessor Carter’s estate both have a stake in the club.
