In terms of his football career, he began playing at the age of seven. He began his football career with FC Persimmon, a minor team in his hometown of Kawasaki. The FC Barcelona School squad chose him to compete in the Sodexo European Rusas Cup, which was held in Belgium, based on his talent. Later, he joined the Kawasaki Frontale junior youth squad.

He passed the trial for FC Barcelona’s youth program, La Masia, in August of 2011 and was finally asked to join them. Kubo played for Barca Alevi there, and in his first full season, he appeared in 30 games. He led the league in scoring with 74 goals.

Based on his success in his third full season, 2014-15, he was promoted to Barca Infantil A (U14). Later, it was found that the Spanish club had violated FIFA’s under-18 transfer rules, rendering him ineligible to play. After all of this, he returned to Japan and joined FC Tokyo’s junior youth team.


On August 22, 2019, he became the third Japanese player to join Mallorca, following Yoshita Okubo and Akihiro Ienaga. He joined RCD Mallorca on a season-long loan and made his La Liga debut on September 1. Despite their club’s 2-0 loss to Valencia, it was a fantastic moment for him. Kubo became the youngest Japanese player to play in a Top 4 European league at the age of 18 years, two months, and 28 days.

Takefusa also scored his first goal on November 10, 2019, and his second goal on February 21, 2020, both against Villareal. Two weeks later, he scored his third goal against SD Eibar. He was loaned to Villareal CF until the end of the 2020-21 season on August 10, 2020. Several teams attempted to sign the 19-year-old after he established himself as a rising star during his previous season.

Furthermore, his transfer to Villarreal, who finished fifth last season, will provide him the opportunity to participate in the UEFA Europa League against some of Europe’s finest teams. The head coach of Japan’s national and Olympic teams, Hajime Moriyasu, applauded his move.
