She has been the head coach at Stanford University since 1985. She has helped teams reach 13 NCAA Final Fours in 32 NCAA Tournament appearances and has guided teams to 23 Pacific-12 Conference regular-season and 13 Pac-12 Tournament championships. By 2019, Stanford has won two NCAA titles and appeared in 12 Final Fours.

Tara’s 900–192 record at Stanford makes her only the seventh Division I coach in history to win 900 games in a single season. She led the Cardinal to their third NCAA title with a 54-53 victory against Pac-12 rival Arizona Wildcats in April 2021. They had won a title for the first time in 29 years.
