Kayla, Tate’s mother, was concerned about his safety while in the custody of his father, Brian Buening. On August 6, she contacted the Madison County Sheriff’s Office to check on their well-being.
Kayla claimed that Brian suffered from PTSD, depression, a “history of suicidal ideations with two failed suicide attempts,” alcoholism, and rage issues, according to court records.
Buening’s case was withdrawn because he “carried out his threats and committed suicide and the minor.” However, White is fighting for justice. Will League, White’s lawyer, told a publication that the officer put White in risk by permitting her to knock on the door of her ex, who had allegedly threatened to murder her a few days earlier.
