Ted Hankey’s Profession & Career

Hankey is a professional darts player. Hankey defeated Bob Taylor, Steve Douglas, Kevin Painter, and Chris Mason to win the BDO World Darts Championship in 2000. In the championship match, he defeated Ronnie Baxter 6-0, winning with a spectacular 170 checkout, the highest three-dart finish ever. The final was the shortest in tournament history, lasting only 46 minutes. In the semifinals, he set a championship record with 22 x 180s versus Chris Mason. (His subsequent best score is 15, which he also achieved against Martin Adams in the semifinals and Tony O’Shea in the final in 2009.)

In addition, in the 2000 competition, he set a record with 48 x 180s. Hankey returned to the title game in 2001, but John Walton defeated him 6-2.

PDC Profession

As a result of his victory in the world championship, Hankey won an invitation to the PDC’s 2009 Grand Slam of Darts. He accepted the offer and was assigned to group E, which included Simon Whitlock, Scott Waites, and Wayne Mardle. Hankey lost his first group game 3-5 to Waites, but the audience got on his nerves yet again by screaming and shouting at him as he was throwing, plainly distressing Hankey.

Later, in an interview with ITV4, Hankey expressed his disgust, saying, “If that’s the darts you want to play, keep it,” and pushing for more crowd control in the PDC. Hankey ultimately defeated Wayne Mardle, but he was upset 5-4 by Simon Whitlock. Ted ultimately defeated Wayne Mardle, but he was upset 5-4 by Simon Whitlock. Hankey did state after the match that he wants to compete in the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts.

Furthermore, Hankey got to the quarterfinals of the 2012 BDO World Darts Championship after overcoming newcomer Clive Barden 3-2 in sets and Scott Waites, who had eliminated him the previous year, 4-3. Martin Atkins was defeated 5-1 in the quarterfinals by Hankey. In the semi-final against rookie and eventual champion Christian Kist, Hankey had a dart at the bullseye to win the match 6-4, but Kist came back to win the match 6-5.

Return to the PDC

The PDC announced on its website the day after Hankey’s BDO resignation that the semifinalists of the 2012 BDO World Darts Championship would be given two-year tour cards. This meant Hankey didn’t have to compete in the qualifying school competition, which is usually required for all new PDC players, and instead gained an automatic tour card to play in the PDC and its Pro Tour.

Hankey won his two PDC matches in Crawley, defeating Steve West 6-5 and Toon Greebe 6-1 before falling to Connie Finnan 6-4 in the first UK Open qualifier. In May, Hankey reached the last 16 of the Players Championship Event 5, where he was defeated 1-6 by Raymond van Barneveld. Hankey’s best finish on the circuit thus far. Hankey won his first big tournament on tour, the UK Open, with a 4-1 victory over qualifiers Danny Dutson and Andy Jenkins. However, he was eliminated 1-4 in the second round by Mervyn King, his old BDO opponent.

Health Issues

Hankey was paired with Steve Beaton, Michael van Gerwen, and Robert Thornton in Group B of the 2012 Grand Slam of Darts. Thornton defeated him 0-5 but beat Beaton 5-3 to remain in the group. Hankey struggled with a three-dart average of 59 in the first leg, missing five consecutive attempts at a single (including two that entirely missed the board to set up a double).

Return of Ted Hankey to the BDO

Hankey’s two-year tour card expired after the 2014 World Championship, and because he was ranked 94th in the world—well outside the top 64 players who retain their professional status—he lost his spot in the PDC. He canceled his registration before the start of Q School. Soon after, it was discovered that Hankey had taken the difficult decision to rejoin the BDO after leaving the PDC. In his first season back in the BDO, his greatest performances were two quarterfinal appearances, as he nearly missed qualifying for the Lakeside by one spot at number 29 (the top 28 qualified).

Furthermore, he was unable to proceed from the Hull qualifying rounds for the Masters, Lakeside, and World Trophy. He qualified for the 2015 BDO World Trophy but was defeated 6-4 in the first round by Sam Hewson. He and John Gwynne gave post-game commentary for the rest of the competition.
