He began working on a Ph.D. dissertation in philosophy but finally abandoned it due to disenchantment with the field’s job prospects. In late 1962, linger abandoned philosophy to pursue a career in law. He finished law school in three years and received his Ph.D. in the spring of 1966.

Similarly, just before completing his studies, in late 1965, hlinger was hired as an assistant professor at the University of Innsbruck.
