After transferring the body to an abandoned country estate, he bathed it in 45 liters of hydrochloric acid and 6kg of caustic soda. He buried her body, then dug it up again, broke it up into tiny pieces, burned it, and buried it again.

The day following her murder, Maria’s sister reported her missing. Gotthard originally informed authorities that his wife had fled the house in a bout of depression, leaving her phone and bank cards behind.

He further alleged that he chose to murder his wife because he had started dating another lady. As a result, he was concerned that a divorce might produce complications for his children.
