Stewart raced in an evening sprint car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in Canandaigua, New York on August 9, 2014. Stewart collided with Kevin Ward Jr. around halfway through the race, forcing Ward to lose control and spin-off into the wall. There was a full-course yellow warning flag flying. Instead of waiting for race officials, an enraged Ward went onto the track, gesticulating defiantly as Stewart neared.

Stewart touched Ward with his right rear tire as he approached under full-course caution. Ward was killed when the right rear tire of Stewart’s vehicle collided with him and hurled 25 feet (7.6 m) across the track. Ward was taken to Thompson Hospital by paramedics but was declared dead upon arrival due to “severe blunt trauma.”
