Tonya Maxene Harding was born in Portland, Oregon, on November 12, 1970, to Alan Harding and LaVona Golden. She began skating at the age of three.

She delivered her first triple axel in the United States Championship in 1991 and went on to win the title. She repeated the triple axel in the 1991 World Championships, becoming the first American to do so. She eventually won the competition.

Harding represented the United States in both the Winter Olympics and the World Championships in 1992. She did not make the United States World Championship team in 1993. She came in eighth place at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994.

Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by Shane Stant during a practice session for the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January 1994. Harding’s former husband Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt hired Stant. Eckhardt was sentenced to 18 months in prison. The USFSA banned her for life after the incident.
