Trent Franks was born on June 19, 1957, in the now-defunct community of Uravan, Colorado. His parents, Juanita and Edward Taylor Franks gave birth to him with a cleft lip and palate. When his parents divorced, Franks assumed parental authority at home.
Franks graduated from Briggsdale High School in Colorado in 1976. Later, he moved to Texas with his brother and best buddy to drill wells. He relocated to Arizona in 1981, where he continued to drill wells.

Franks co-sponsored the Goodlatte-Leach Internet Gambling Prohibition Act and the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act in 2006. Simultaneously, he signed a commitment sponsored by Americans for Prosperity to oppose any global warming legislation that raises taxes.
Franks presented a bill in 2013 that would prohibit abortions beyond 20 weeks, with exceptions for rape and incest. He is also one of the founders of the Tempe Crisis Pregnancy Center. Franks was charged with sexual harassment in 2017 after he urged two of his employees to be surrogate mothers for his children.
