Tsai Ing-wen was born on August 31, 1956, in Mackay Memorial Hospital in Zhongshan, Taiwan. She is 66 years old and was born under the sign of Virgo. Furthermore, she is Taiwanese by nationality and of the Hakka race.

Her parents are Tsai Chieh-sheng (father) and Chang Chin-Fong (mother). Ing-wen’s father managed an auto repair shop and had four mistresses. She is the youngest of her parents’ nine children. Moving on to her academic credentials, she graduated from Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls High School. She then attended National Taiwan University and received a law degree. Tsai Ing-wen also received a Master of Laws degree from Cornell University Law School in 1980. She later attended the London School of Economics before earning a Ph.D. in law from the University of London in 1984.

Ing-wen began her career as a law professor at Soochow University and National Chengchi University in Taipei. She joined the government in the early 1990s and was a key trade negotiator in Taiwan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) under the then-ruling Kuomintang (KMT). Tasi was named Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council when the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) came to power in 2000.

Then, in 2004, Ing-wen joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and was eventually nominated by the DPP to run in the 2004 parliamentary election. In addition, she was appointed vice president of the Executive Yuan in 2006. At the time, she was also the chairwoman of the Consumer Protection Commission. When Premier Su Tseng-chang stepped down in 2007, she resigned along with the rest of the cabinet. The next year, she defeated Koo Kwang-ming in the DPP chairperson election.

She was elected Taiwan’s first female leader in 2016, with 56% of the vote, defeating her opponent Eric Chu by a margin of 25.04%. She has since defied protocol by making overtures to the United States, causing problems with mainland China. Tsai won reelection with more than 57% of the popular vote in 2020.

Tsai is the second president of the Democratic Progressive Party and the first democratically elected president who has never served as Mayor of Taipei. She has received international acclaim for her response to the COVID-19 outbreak and for defying official pressure in the People’s Republic of China. She resigned as Democratic People’s Party (DPP) leader in November 2022, citing her party’s dismal performance in municipal elections earlier that month.

Ing-wen has received numerous accolades and honors for her work. She was awarded the Grand Collar of the National Order of Merit in 2016. The next year, she was awarded the Grand Cross with Gold Star of Doctor Jose Matias Delgado’s National Order. She was awarded the Order of Belize and the Grand Cross of the National Order of Honour and Merit in 2018. In 2019, she was awarded the Order of St. Christopher and Nevis. She was named to Time’s List of the most influential people in 2020.
