Hedeman won a lot of junior rodeos when he was younger. In 1980, he even won the high school rodeo bull riding and All-Around titles in New Mexico.

He was a part of the rodeo team at his university, competing in bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding. Similarly, he obtained his PRCA permit as a Bronc rider at a single rodeo in 1983.

Hedeman was well-known for riding bulls that had not before been ridden, and he qualified for eleven National Finals Rodeos (NFRs). By 1993, he had surpassed $1 million in career earnings and had won the PRCA world titles in 1986, 1989, and 1991.

Tuff later suffered a neck injury at the NFR in 1993. Because of the injury, he was forced to miss the entire 1994 season. He was also crucial in the formation of the Professional Bull Riders.

He went on to win the 1995 PBR World Championship. Despite an encounter with Bodacious that resulted in multiple fractured bones on his face, he was able to win.

He rarely missed capturing a second consecutive PBR world title in 1996. During the 1997 PBR season, he finished third in the world. Tuff’s last ride came in 1998 at the PBR Bud Light Cup Series event in Odessa, Texas. He announced his retirement in 1999. At the time of his accident in 1998, he was leading both the PBR and the PRCA World Standings.

Furthermore, following his retirement, Tuff Hedeman was able to serve as President of the PBR from 1992 to 2004. From 1999 to 2004, he also served as a pundit for televised PBR events.

He also temporarily joined the PRCA Xtreme Bulls tour in 2005 as a sideline reporter for televised events before joining CBR shortly after. From 2005 to 2011, he was President of CBR, and from 2005 to 2008, he was a pundit on televised CBR events.

From 2011 through 2018, Hedeman worked as an ambassador and chute boss for the aforementioned organization. He then left CBR in early 2018 to launch his own company, the Tuff Hedeman Bull Riding Tour (THBRT). Currently, he spends his free time participating in team roping and bullriding contests. He even delivers analysis on CBR bull-riding events that are shown on television.
