Yolanda Adams was born in Houston, Texas, on August 27, 1961. She has five brothers and sisters. She was raised in Texas and attended Sterling High School. In 1979, she graduated from high school. Yolanda attended Texas Southern University and, after graduating, began working as a teacher. Aside from that, she did some part-time modeling.

Both jobs were temporary because Adams has always enjoyed music, particularly singing choirs and gospel. She was influenced by the American gospel singer Thomas Whitfield and was also drawn to the choirs of the Church of God in Christ, a Christian church. Yolanda Adams was featured as a vocalist in the 1982 single For My Liberty by the choir of the Church of God in Christ. Give Us Peace by Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Choir was another choir in which she appeared. Yolanda’s first album, Just As I Am, was released in 1987.

She signed with Tribute Records in 1990 and released her second album, Through The Storm. She worked with Ben Tankard, a producer, and keyboardist who admired Adams’ jazzy voice. In 1994, he included her on his album.

Her third album, Save the World, was released, including her signature song, The Battle Is The Lord’s. In 1995, she released her fourth album, More Than a Melody, with Ben producing most of the songs. Yolanda… Live in Washington was her fifth album, and Songs from the Heart was her final.
