Despite being barred from attending school, she enrolled in a hidden school. Education was made lawful in 2001. She was obliged to return to Halima Khazan High School in secret after her father was moved to work in Paktia. Zarifa Ghafari’s Profession & Career
On November 5, 2020, the Taliban assassinated her father in front of his Kabul residence. Ghafari could only attend Panjab University in Chandigarh, India, because of a scholarship. Her parents had already turned down her application because they did not want her to live alone while attending Shaikh Zayed University. She earned an economics degree and could have lived in Chandigarh, but she preferred to return home.
Ghafari applied to be the mayor of Maidan Shahr, and after passing the exams, she was appointed ahead of other (male) candidates. In July 2018, she was formally appointed as Maidan Shahr’s mayor by the country’s current President, Ashraf Ghani. She was elected as Afghanistan’s youngest mayor at the age of 24, and several media outlets wrongly labeled Ghafari as the country’s first female mayor.
However, because of protests and threats from local lawmakers about her age and gender, her term as mayor of Maiden Shahr was postponed for nine months. Other female mayors have served in Afghanistan, however, they have typically served in cities with more acceptable local cultures. She was in an almost impossible position in Wardak, a very conservative region where the Taliban had widespread support.
Zarifa Ghafari was harassed by a group of men who stormed her office on her first day as mayor and demanded her resignation. She received death threats from the Taliban and ISIL shortly after entering office as mayor. Zarifa took the oath of office as Maidan Shahr’s mayor in March 2019. She did, however, live in Kabul owing of security concerns. Ghafari is an inspiration to other women since she was able to initiate a littering campaign in her neighborhood.

As the Taliban advanced, Ghafari claimed that she would remain in the nation until August 2021. “I’m sitting here waiting for them,” she stated on August 15, 2021, after the Taliban took Kabul. Nobody is willing to help my family or me. My husband and I are simply sitting next to them. And they’ll come after me and kill me.” She and her partner, Bashir Mohammadi, as well as her mother, four brothers, and three sisters, escaped Afghanistan in the middle of August 2021, when the Taliban gained control of the country’s government. They arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, August 18.
