Dean Ray Koontz was born on July 9, 1945, in Everett, Pennsylvania, to Florence (née Logue) and Raymond Koontz. As a child, he was frequently abused by his alcoholic father.
He attended the Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where he won a fiction competition sponsored by The Atlantic, an American lifestyle magazine. He received his diploma in 1967. He went on to teach English at Mechanicsburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, after graduating.
